Mobile World Congress, Barcelona — Mavenir has made progress on its cloud-native open radio access network (RAN) play, announcing at Mobile World Congress that it is a partner in Deutsche Telekom’s planned European deployment.
The company will supply massive MIMO radios as part of a multi-vendor rollout in Europe starting later this year, and will act as a system integrator for the deployment. Mavenir also has existing deals with Dish Wireless in the U.S. and Airtel in India.
At the massive mobile blowout in Barcelona, John Baker, senior vice president of ecosystem business development at Mavenir, told Silverlinings that the company is currently supporting over 40,000 5G radios on the Dish network with its open virtual-RAN (V-RAN) software. “We supply all the software to support the radios,” Baker said.
Baker lauds Dish as the “purest” open RAN (O-RAN) deployment. He also noted that they make sure to have two vendors for every element of their network, in true O-RAN fashion.
“Its the first network that’s really drawing on the cloud,” Baker said, alluding to Dish’s decision to have Amazon Web Services (AWS) host its 5G standalone (5G SA) core in the AWS cloud.
